Well, I spent most of the evening attempting to clean and organize, copied a tape for Dianne that I've been meaning to do for a week, and scanning some new photos. This one was DYING to be an icon!

Yet another LOTR Survey
1. Who is your favourite character(s)?
In the movie? I have two, Frodo and Gandalf. Followed closely by Boromir. You don't ask least favorite, but that's Galadriel, who I still contend has her own agenda...
2. What is your favourite LOTR quote?
In the movie, it's "They have a cave troll." In the books, it's probably the discussion between Elrond and Gandalf about what will happen to Frodo. The quote is something like "He may become like a glass filled with a clear light..."
3. How long have you been waiting for a live action LOTR movie?:
I haven't been. I didn't expect that there would ever be one worth seeing.
4. When did you first read LOTR and how many times since then?:
I think I read it for the first time about 35 years ago or so, a year or two after NOT liking The Hobbit. I was much happier with LOTR, and spent most of the late 60s and all of the 70s pretty much obsessed with it. I used to travel to Chicago (quite a trip when I was a kid) just to go to a Middle Earth Bookshop in the loop.
5. Whom do you think was cast exactly the way you imagined?:
Sean Astin as Samwise Gamgee. He absolutely blew me away on first viewing. His acting became (to me) almost transparent after that, because he was so much the character to me, that I couldn't see a "performance" at all.
6. When will you see The Two Towers?
I'm still hoping I can somehow get a ticket (even at $500) to the NYC premiere. If I can't, I might go anyway, and just wait outside and try to snap photos of arrivals and departures. That might set back my actual first viewing by a few days. If I *don't* go to NYC, I imagine I'll try for a midnight showing in Chicago.
7. How many times do you plan on seeing it?
Well, I saw FOTR 30 times. Don't know if I can keep up that pace, but then again I was stuck in Europe for 10 days early on this year, so maybe it will be even higher.
8. Who is your favourite villian?
The words "favourite" and "villain" don't seem to belong in the same sentence, do they? I guess Saruman, because Christopher Lee did such a good job of it. In the books, the barrow wights scared me as much as anything, because they were so outside of human comprehension or reason.
9. Which character are you most like?
Never thought about it that way. Maybe Gimli, because while I have a set of talents and knowledge, I can't alway figure out how to get them to apply to the task at hand.
10. Mirkwood, Lothlorien, Rivendell, The Shire, Mordor, Gondor or the Misty Mountains. Where would you most like to live?
Answered this on Rings-Thing -- definitely Rivendell. Love the elves, love the water, and there's always what's-his-name...

Unless I was a high mucky-muck in Mordor, wouldn't be much point there, but that's too obvious. Actually, unless I was living with a certain hobbit, I'd probably be pretty damned bored in The Shire. And I have one big problem with Lothlorien...

ummm.... Do I *really* have to answer that? I think you get the picture. Literally.
13. Favorite Elf?
Legolas, I guess. Most days. Although I worship Elrond.
14. Favorite Dwarf?
Even in the books, dwarves were never a favorite of mine, although they seemed fun enough.
15. Favourite Human?
Boromir. An interesting, complex, and heroic man.
16. Favourite Wizard?
Gandalf, probably the Grey, who was a more "human" and compassionate figure (not to mention quirky) than Gandalf the White.
17. Favourite Orc?
You must be joking.
18. Part in the books that made you cry?
The whole plight of Frodo, of course, although I suspect the movies will be MUCH worse for me.
19. Part in the movie that made you cry?
The whole sequence of events wherein Frodo starts to lose some of his hero-worship of Gandalf and take on more responsibility. I don't want it to happen.
20. If you had lots of money, a good life, family, friend and were happy would you give it all up to live in Middle Earth?
Nope. Los Angeles, maybe, but not middle earth.
21. If you were given a one night stand with ONE character who would you go with?
Character... hmmm... Can I pick what part of the story it would be in? If so, probably Frodo, but I doubt I could bear to see him near the end. If no choice, then... Legolas. Elrond is a bit intimidating, but he'd be the next choice.
22. Was the movie what you hoped?
I had purposely built up no expectations except that two of my all-time favorite actors, Sean Bean and Ian McKellen, would do the best they could with whatever they were given. So in that respect, the movie is universes beyond what I had hoped for.
23. What do you think they should have changed?
That's a bit unclear. Changed from the book? Or not done the way they did? I liked most of the changes Peter made, especially paring way down all the stuff in the Shire in the beginning. The Sackville-Bagginses never did anything for me. What didn't I like the way Peter did it? I try not to think along those lines. The only thing that really, really annoys me is a continuity error and not a filming choice: the amazing disappearing/reappearing hand of Boromir in his death scene. It really detracts from one of the most powerful scenes in the movie.
24. Who is your favorite actor(s) out of the Fellowship?
Well, as I said earlier, going into the project, Sean Bean and Ian McKellen had been favorite actors of mine for years. My *new* favorite from the movie is... wait for it.... Elijah Wood.
25. After seeing the movie, which weapon would you most like to learn?
I don't have the arm or upper body strength for any of them, I think. I've always wanted to learn archery, though.
26. (if you're a girl) Which LOTR woman would you want to be?
I haven't been a "girl" in about 30 years (and I fixed the spelling on this question, argh), but the only women worth being IMHO are Galadriel (OK, I don't like her, but she's powerful) and Eowyn.
27. (if you're a guy, but girls can answer this as well) Which LOTR man (actually male) character would you want to be?
I hate having to rewrite the questions... I can't way that I want to be any of them, but assuming I had the requisite knowledge and strength of will, I guess I'd like to be Elrond.
28. Thing you are most looking forward to in TTT?
Returning to Middle Earth. And seeing Gandalf the White.
28. How did you get into LOTR?
The movie or the books? Read the books when I was about 9-10 or so and spent much of the NEXT 10 years alternately inhabiting Tolkien's world and Lovecraft's.
29. How did you hear of the LOTR books, or who gave them to you?
I suppose my mother must have, although I'm still surprised I read them after having not particularly liked The Hobbit. Then again, I was always dying for *anything* to read, and I went through most of Shakespeare at pretty much the same age.
30. Has LOTR (books/movie) changed or helped your life in anyway?
Oh god, let's not even go there. 30 viewings, trips to cons, buying stuff on ebay, parties, weblogs, fiction...

Well, I don't have one, and every box and stick of furniture is stacked with things, since I'm so cramped in my small apartment. Near my bed, I think I have: my alarm clock, a box of cat treats, a small HEPA air filter, some hair ornaments, and anything else that landed there recently.
What is the geekiest part of your music collection?
Not sure what kind of music would be considered "geeky". My collection is fairly eclectic, ranging from classical (I am most partial to piano, such as Chopin or Liszt, but I like a lot of other things especially if they've been used for a ballet or a skating performance) to techno-dance (Erasure), and lots of 60s (Mamas and the Papas, Donovan, Beatles, Stones, Who) and 80s (Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, Ultravox). Most stuff by the Eagles, the Police, Sting, Dwight Yoakum, Midge Ure; selections from Patti Lupone, Julia Fordham, George Michael, Neil Diamond, Elton John, and a host of others...
What do you eat when you raid the fridge late at night?
Well, I mostly eat my main meal very late at night (midnight or so), so my raiding is usually when I get home from work. Foods of choice are sliced cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, chocolate (yes, I keep it in the fridge), or cookies (not in the fridge). I must always have a can, bottle or glass of Pepsi or Mountain Dew with me, at all times.
What is your secret guaranteed weeping movie?
I can't say there is ONE, although I suspect very soon it will be "The Return of the King." The Tim Dalton "Wuthering Heights" usually gets to me. The Vivien Leigh "Waterloo Bridge." That one certain scene in "The Ice Storm" and the similar one in "The Witness" (see photo at upper right if you need a clue). Peter Weir has a moment he repeated with Mel Gibson racing against time to save a friend--he used it in both Gallipoli and The Year of Living Dangerously--that makes me want to scream and cry simultaneously. If you want one thing that will absolutely, positively make me cry every time, it's the original London cast recording of "Les Miserables," especially "I Dreamed a Dream" and "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables." I am notorious for, the first time I went to see Les Mis in the theatre, having started to cry during the OVERTURE.
If you could have plastic surgery, what would you have done?
I have always, from the first day I can remember, wanted to have my nose fixed. However, since I've gotten so badly out of shape in recent years, I think I'd start with a tummy tuck.
Do you have a completely irrational fear?
Not in the way of spiders or heights or such. I have panic attacks usually triggered by being closed in by large groups of people and being unable to get away, but that's not the same sort of thing. My biggest fear, whether rational or not, is of making the wrong decision (one of which I recently did IN A BIG WAY). I obsess over nearly every decision I make, second guessing myself until people just want to shoot me to put me out of my misery.
What is the little physical habit that gives away an insecure moment?
I lick my lips incessantly when I'm nervous.
Do you ever have to beg?
Ummm, "have to"? No.
Are you a pyromaniac?
I was never much into playing with matches, although I enjoy campfires as much as the next person. Maybe if I ever make it to a Guy Fawkes celebration, I'll change my mind.
Do you have too many love interests?
Ummm, people would probably say yes on my behalf. I almost never give up liking someone or something--I just keep adding to my list. I usually, however, totally obsess over only one person or thing at a time.
Do you know anyone famous?
Between SF fandom and skating fandom, sure. Maybe even some names you'd know!
Describe your bed:
I have a 20-year-old futon. Maybe 10 years ago, a neighbor of my mother's got rid of her futon frame (very hard, unfinished wood) and futon, so I added those to mine. Between the two old, hard futons, at least I can only *barely* feel the slats...
Spontaneous or planned?
I really, really prefer to have things relatively planned out, so that at least if I want to be spontaneous, I know what I'm missing. Lately I've been more spontaneous, but that's only because I'm so disorganized.
Who should play you in a movie about your life?
Unfortunately, the best person would have been Gilda Radner.
Do you know how to play poker?
Boy, I used to. Never played with much regularity, but I could play. I suppose it would come back to me.
What do you carry with you at all times?
Chapstick, an emery board, my keys, Dristan (for allergies), sinus pills, ibuprofen, clorazepate for my panic attacks (which I left on the counter today--be calm!!!), the keycard for my office door, usually my Wrigley Field ID, my wallet (with ATM card and grocery store shopper cards, credit cards and LOTR fanclub card), and a pen. I used to always carry a notebook, but lately I've been forgetting it. A CTA card and a spare CTA card.
How do you drive?
I don't. Gave up driving about 25 years ago, although I maintain my driver's license.
What do you miss most about being little?
I mostly didn't enjoy my childhood. I do miss living in a house rather than an apartment, and having a yard I could sit in.
Are you happy with your given name?
Relatively. I used to hate it, but now I mostly enjoy being different--just in time for all the gen-xers to give their kids Victorian names and I'm introduced to another one with my name every day.
What was the last song you were listening to?
Fallen Angel by Midge Ure, the live version.
How much money would it take to get you to give up the Internet for one year?
Enough to make me fabulously wealthy for life, and even then I'd probably cheat.

The walls? I guess off white. I tend to decorate with slate blue and dusty purple, what little decorating I do. Or black.

In high school and my first year of college, I very badly wanted to go into drama. I did a couple of bit parts my freshman year in High School, and in my sophomore year I won an award for my role in "Up the Down Staircase." Unfortunately, I then hit college and was totally out of my depth, and gave it up.
Have you ever been in love?
Frequently, but not seriously.
Do you talk a lot?
Either incessantly or not at all. There's not much middle ground with me.
Do you like yourself and believe in yourself?
No, and not really, but maybe. Sting once said something when asked about his attitude, that his aloofness was a weird combination of shyness and arrogance. I'm not Sting, but I know exactly what he meant.

I was always afraid I had an addictive personality so I avoid most drugs. Did a bit of grass in my time, and had a brief flirtation with overuse of alcohol.

Catching up on my NetFlix Rentals
Thank heavens it's finally cool enough to actually go into my living room and watch a movie. I've had the same 3 CD's waiting to be watched for over a month now.
Been wanting to see The Cider House Rules for some time now. And not only because Tobey Maguire is my second favorite geek-boy of all time (no points for guessing my favorite). But I'd heard great things about the movie, and Michael Caine had won an Oscar for his performance, and I *still* hadn't seen Charlize Theron in anything... so it seemed like it was time.
I've been having a rough week, and when I started this movie, I found that it's slow pace and lack of focus didn't hold my attention at first try. However, going back to it another night, I found I loved it. It does indeed have a slow, sort of pastoral and slightly epic, feel to it. It doesn't jump right out and grab you, but rather pulls you slowly into its spell. It has a sort of dreamlike quality, with many issues touched on but not resolved, and some characters whose fates aren't fully explored. In a feature concerning the making of the movie, the book and screenplay's author, John Irving, says that he is glad that he did the screenplay himself so that he could choose what to pare down or leave out. Seeing what he has chosen for the screen definitely wants to make me read the book to see if more is explained there, or if he has left as much ambiguity in the printed form as he did in the film. (Ambiguity is certainly not unknown in Irving's work.)
The performances are uniformly first rate. I was particularly impressed with Kieran Culkin as Buster, one of the orphans who is closest to Tobey's Homer, and Erik Per Sullivan as Fuzzy, one of the most fragile boys. Caine and Maguire are, as expected, first rate, although I would *really* like to see Tobey play an entirely different character at some point since Homer is very much within his comfort zone. The supporting cast is everything you could hope for, and each character seems to have a fully-developed life outside the scope of the movie.
This is by no means a movie without flaws. It's pace has been described by some as somnolent, and I understand that much of the background given in the book about Homer has been excised. It raises a lot of questions that it doesn't answer. But I found it totally worthy of the time I spent watching it. Rent the DVD, if you can, and also take a look at the documentary (and listen to the always-interesting John Irving and director Lasse Hallstrom) and the deleted scenes.

A page of LiveJournal icons can be found here--let me know if you adopt any. Can also be used wherever you need a 100x100 pixel photo, of course. They are heavily skewed towards the Elijah/Frodo, but what did you expect? This is addictive! I may have to put some of these in my blog margin (and probably anywhere else I can think of).

1. What is your lineage? Where are your ancestors from? Scots-Irish, Lebanese, German (two grandparents entirely German, so that's the biggest proportion).
2. Of those countries, which would you most like to visit? Been to Scotland and adored it, so if we're excluding where I've been, then Ireland.
3. Which would you least like to visit? Why? Lebanon. 1) it's not safe, and 2) I don't get along with Arabs very well, all the more so for having grown up with them
4. Do you do anything during the year to celebrate or recognize your heritage? Not particularly. I do usually wear green on St. Patrick's Day, but that's about it.
5. Who were the first ancestors to move to your present country (parents, grandparents, etc)? My maternal grandmother's family (Keane) is DAR material, I understand.
