Ian was a joy, as always, and Sam Neill was perfect as Charles II, but the movie belonged, without doubt, to Robert Downey, Jr. I'm not the only one who is in awe of his talent; read Sir Ian's comments
here. If only the restoration of Robert's character in this movie could be mirrored by something similar in his own life--the plot itself is all to familiar: a brilliant, outrageous, talented man is singled out for fame and fortune, but his success leads him to forget what it was he did best, and concentrate only on his own pleasure. Eventually, this leads to his fall from favour, but with the help of the right people, he is eventually restored both spiritually and materially.
